If you have ever gotten tongue stuck on a frozen metal pole (à la “A Christmas Story) then you know exactly how difficult and painful it can be trying to free yourself.

This is what happened to a little finch who stopped at Wilson Nelson’s farm to get a drink from an open water heater. While taking a sip, the finch got his feet wet and decided to rest upon the metal fence right next to the water source in order to dry off.

Unfortunately, the below freezing temperament caused the water to ice its feet over, leaving him rooted in place. After hearing the chirps of panic and fear, Nelson came out to investigate the scene, where he found the poor finch unsuccessfully trying to free itself.

With a bit of quick thinking and ingenuity, Nelson knew just what to do and came to the rescue.Starting by grasping the finch firmly in his hands, Nelson held and hoped the heat from his body would be enough to melt the ice at the bird’s feet.

When that did not seem to be working fast enough, he bent over and began blowing his warm breath right at the source. Within a few minutes, the huffing and puffing did its job and Nelson bid the finch a final farewell saying, “Here we go little Birdie. Go ahead a fly away.”

Nelson then became an instant internet sensation after posting the video of this incredible, life-saving feat.
