In 1996, the U.S. was rocked by news that six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was murdered.

At the time, the media was in a frenzy for scoop about just who was involved in the case as she was initially reported missing and later found dead in the house. The family was suspected by outsiders looking in.

Even her nine-year-old brother faced media scrutiny, and 20 years later, he’s given his first interview on the subject, touching on the criticism he received from those watching the news reports when it was revealed that he never left his bedroom amidst the chaos.

Now 29, Burke Ramsey granted the interview to Dr. Phil as part of his talk show. In the televised interview, he told Dr. Phil that the first thing he remembered from the morning of JonBenet going missing was his mother coming into his room, saying, “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh,” but “the next thing I remember is a police officer coming to my room and shining a flashlight … I was just lying there.”

While there was speculation at the time that Burke didn’t leave his bedroom because the family members were somehow involved in the homicide, he also told the TV host that, “I guess I kind of like to avoid conflict or, I don’t know, I guess I just felt safer there.” 20 years later, no one has been charged in the death of JonBenet Ramsey, though there are still investigators who look into the cold case file, hoping to find answers.
