Home ownership is the great American Dream. With the recent Great Recession and volatile home market, this dream seems more out of reach than ever. For homeless veterans struggling with mental illness, owning a home seems completely impossible.

Thankfully, Veterans Community Project in Kansas City, Missouri, is on a mission to create new possibilities for the men and women who have sacrificed so much for America.

Veterans Community Project was founded by Kevin Jameson, who felt called to help his fellow veterans achieve the dignity they deserve.

Jameson partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project and Team Rubicon to get started. The team has cleared enough land for 50 tiny homes, and now they’re working on building them. Other community organizations have stepped in to help, like 2x4s For Hope, which is donating lumber with supportive messages handwritten on each plank.

The tiny homes are only twenty feet long and 240 square feet, but that’s big enough to provide a sense of security and pride. The veterans who move into this community will have a place of their own and a built-in support network.

Constructing the houses is only the first step in providing a home, and Veterans Community Project is committed to the hard work of helping these veterans reintegrate into society, one nail at a time.
