Reneita Smith is being hailed as a hero. She went back onto a burning bus to make sure all of the children on there were safely outside.

Smith considers the children her own, and she was going to do everything she could to make sure nothing happened to them. It was a parent’s worst fear as the school bus was full of flames.

There were 20 students on the elementary school bus. As soon as Smith saw the flames, she pulled over to the side of the road to get everyone off the vehicle. The emergency door and windows were opened so that students would have a way to get off.

Several neighbors stood by in shock to take pictures of the bus and to make sure the children were far enough away so that they wouldn’t be burned. One woman had a small extinguisher, but by the time she got it to help, the flames were too high.

Someone else provided a safe place in her back yard for the children to wait until their parents arrived. The local fire department was able to put out the flames. They also checked the children and the bus driver to make sure they were alright.
