Americans love sushi, but they don’t often stop to think about what might be in their favorite raw fish dishes.

It’s hard to regulate or sanitize raw meat products, so restaurants just do their best to serve healthy meals to customers. As one man recently found out, this informal system isn’t keeping Americans safe any longer.

After a few days of constant stomach pain and itching skin, the Chinese man went to his doctor. His blood and skin were tested, but the results didn’t find any reason why would he be suffering from those symptoms.

As the next step, the doctor took a few exploratory X-rays to try and find out what was wrong with the patient. Neither one of them expected to see what the films revealed.

The man’s torso was filled with worms. They were biting his stomach and intestines, causing the man’s abdomen to hurt constantly while his skin continually prickled. After giving the patient a broad spectrum of antiparisitic and antihelminthic to kill off whatever species was invading his body, the doctor started analyzing his patient’s diet.

The physician consulted with a dietitian, and they were both shocked to find out how often the man was eating sushi and sashimi dishes.

Apparently his regular consumption of these raw foods had introduced the biting worms into his system. Think about that the next time you’re in the mood for Japanese food.
