Pickles make a great side, topping, or snack, but sometimes store-bought pickles just don’t taste as fresh or crisp as we’d like them to.

Thankfully, with just three ingredients, you can make your own pickles right at home. They will taste better, and once you get the hang of making them, you can experiment with different flavoring to make them even more unique.

All you need to make your own pickles is fresh cucumbers, water, and salt. You should pick cucumbers that are dense and have thin skin. You can also add garlic, dill, or spices to the mixture if you want a little extra flavor.

To begin making the pickles, mix the water and salt in a bowl. You should use one tablespoon of salt for every two cups of water. Stir the mixture until the salt has dissolved, and then cut the cucumbers into whatever shape you wish.

Put them into glass jars with an airtight seal and add any other flavoring you want. Then, fill each jar with the water and salt mixture, seal the jars, and wait a few days.

Keep the jars at room temperature for no more than five days. After three days, taste one of the pickles to see if they are to your liking. Once you feel the pickles are done, skim the froth off the top of the jar and place them in the fridge so they don’t continue to ferment.

They should last up to six months in your fridge and will taste much better than those you can buy at the store.
