A lot of hugely influential and inspiring famous people died in 2016, including musicians David Bowie, Prince, and Leonard Cohen. These deaths have brought together fans from around the world and have inspired countless covers of beloved songs.

Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is one such song. The covers continue to pour after his November death, but perhaps the most moving rendition of his famous song occurred before his death in June 2016.

The performance by over 1500 singers at Hearn Generating Station was breathtaking. Choir! Choir! Choir!, a Canadian choir, put out an invitation for anyone to come and sing backup vocals under Rufus Wainright.

After quickly learning their backup parts, the massive choir made up of strangers came together and beautifully supported Wainright’s rendition of Cohen’s classic.

The sheer enormity of the group alone is amazing to see. A lone guitar balances out the song, but perhaps the most powerful moment is when the guitar is silent and the voices alone carry the song.

In what was clearly a night to remember for the singers, the energy was palpable in the packed room. Loving care was brought to every aspect of the performance. As the giant choir swayed together and sang in magical harmony, Wainright did Cohen proud in leading the performance.

This stunning display of unity occurred in a year where it was sorely needed. A mix of ages and races all joined together in a chilling display of the power of art.
